He was involved in the creation of the "THE ALLDAY ORTO" store, which opened in Hakata, Fukuoka.
We were approached about the project in the winter of 2022, and worked on it for about a year and a half with store producer Orto&Company and store architect/designer PLANNING ES. At Ckd, we've also been involved in the rebranding of our sister store, ORTO CAFE. This time, Orto&Company wanted to promote dining in a modern, retro-pop atmosphere while still maintaining the image of the ORTO brand. So, we first worked out the details of the store's image. Because retro-pop encompasses a broad range, we used mutual references to share a sense of what's acceptable and what's not. Through this process, we arrived at a direction for the new store's "THE ALLDAY ORTO" brand, incorporating a pop and playful touch while maintaining the refinement of the ORTO brand without being too influenced by retro.
Next came the idea for a name. Several ideas were proposed, and "THE ALLDAY ORTO" was chosen to convey that the store would be open from morning until night. Once the store's direction and name were decided, the logo design began. In parallel, work began on the design of packaging stickers, shop cards, tools such as menus, uniforms, and store signs. As everything progresses almost simultaneously, progress management is crucial in creating a store. At Ckd, a progress manager acts as the liaison, coordinating with Orto&Company and PLANNING ES to manage the priorities and schedules for the products leading up to the opening, and the designers then carry out production based on that.
For the uniforms, Orto & Company asked about the necessary items such as caps, tops, pants, and aprons, and then Ckd created a styling image that matched the store's image, including the combination of items, color scheme, and logo, and then searched for products that matched it and procured samples. In this case, the T-shirts were silk-screened with catchy graphics. The catchy, graphic T-shirts worn by the staff add an accent to the simple store design.
For store signs, PLANNING ES provides floor plans and instructions for the signs, and then the design proceeds. Sometimes the sign specifications and notation are decided, but Ckd also makes suggestions such as whether to use cut letters or cutting sheets, and the phrases for the sign and decorative signs. After creating the design on a graphic, the designer prints it out at full size and pastes it up at the actual height, repeatedly checking the eye position and size, and making adjustments. This time, the signs were also playful, with the cheese factory featuring a silhouette of cheese and the door leading to the toilet featuring a floral motif, referencing the mountaineering term "picking flowers."
Store construction begins after the store opens, and once opened, adjustments will inevitably be necessary to meet actual demand.
At Ckd, we continue to be involved even after the opening, working on creation and branding to solve problems.
